A type set featuring 2 different designs of the same denomination for the same year: 1) 1857 Braided Hair and Flying Eagle cents 2) 1909 Indian Head and Lincoln Cents 3) 1865 silver and nickel 3 cent pieces (The silver one pushes the limit on how much I'll spend on a single coin) 4) 1883 Shield and Liberty Head Nickels 5) 1938-D Indian Head and 1938 Jefferson nickels 6) 1837 Capped Bust and Liberty Seated half dimes 7) 1837 Capped Bust and Liberty Seated half dimes 8) 1916 Barber and Winged Liberty Head dimes 9) 1838 Capped Bust and Liberty Seated quarter Dollars Skipping the Barber and Standing Liberty quarter combo due to the high cost of the'16 SL.) 10) 1839 reeded edge Capped Bust and Liberty Seated half dollars 11) 1873 Liberty Seated and Trade dollars 12) 1921 Morgan and Peace dollars 13) 2007 Sacagawea and Presidential dollars 14) 1854 Liberty Head and Indian Princess Head gold dollars 15) 1908 Liberty Head and Indian Head Half Eagles ($5 golf pieces) I'm not sure if I would do this set myself. I'm just throwing the idea out there for people's consideration. What do you think?

1793 gets you a 3fer, chain, wreath, and cap large cent.

Quote: 1793 gets you a 3fer, chain, wreath, and cap large cent. True, but all three are extremely rare and expensive. OTOH, large cents from 1839 come in a variety of brief subtypes (outgoing Matron Head, incoming Braided Hair, and transitional Booby Head and Silly Head), all of which are reasonably affordable (not counting the scarce 1839/6). For the silver and nickel 3 cents... well, it doesn't have to be an 1865 - you could try any date in the 1865-1873 range; most of them are about similarly expensive, though. Proof silver 3 cents are apparently cheaper, but still in three-digit range. Possible addition: Seated Liberty half dime and Shield nickel. I'd recommend 1872 for the date, but there are several other options. Another possible addition: 1878-S Trade dollar and 1878 Morgan dollar.

How "different" do you want? All of the Seated Liberty issues (except the dollar) have "without arrows" and "with arrows" varieties. Is that "different" enough?

That is a cool idea but likely out of reach for a lot of us. I already have the 1921 Morgan/Peace and 2007 Sac/Pres pairs (neither with this intention, it just worked out that way).
A few of these, I still need for my type set so I might look at those when I fill those holes, as long as my budget doesn't explicitly prefer a more common date.
