A closer picture would help but it appears to be the result of what is called a clashed die. The obverse and reverse dies come together without a planchet between them. Details transfer from one die to the other as the high points of the dies contact each other. The dies effected will then impart those details to a struck coin.

Still to be sure, a closer picture would help.

Thanks,
Bill

The overlay is not correct. The images should be flipped horizontal. That would place the EPU on the opposite lower side and the leaves would be showing in front of the head. The coin pictured didn't show letters, but leaves.

Heh. That's indicative of the fact I still don't know exactly how a strike through occurs (haven't gotten to that chapter in my Mint Errors book yet :p)

Thanks Coop.

Hi,

It actually does add a premium to the obsolete coins. $3.00 to $5.00 would be a reasonable range for a Winged Liberty Head dime with clash marks that are that prominent.

In the overall scheme of things clashed die errors are fairly common.

It would not be likely to show up in the Cherrypicker's Guide but if someone were doing a study on these dimes, it might be an interesting addition to a book:-)

It's not what I call a "million dollar wonder" but it is a fun coin:-)

Have Fun,
Bill

The coin would be not just a circulated dime. It moves to the level of a 1920 Die clashed obverse dime. I could tell if there were marks on the reverse or not. But it can happened on both dies, or the die could have been replaced with another die or they cleaned/polished both dies and that area didn't remove that pattern. So you might find marks on the reverse of your coin as well.
