I am thrilled with this pick up!

it has spent a long time in an old 2x2. I didn't know if it was attached or not until a few minutes ago. as soon as I freed it, it easily slid apart with no help but it fits nicely back together. it doesn't appear that it was forced apart at any time.

I noticed that it is well struck at 6 o'clock but weakly struck at 12 o'clock as if it was a tilted die or maybe the break affected the strike? comments?

Nice! I don't know if a partial planchet break would affect the strike quality within a collar, but the obverse die was at least slightly off-center, if not tilted.

It must have finally broken apart completely after being in the hands of the discoverer. The patina is not seen on most of the cross section, so it obviously completely broke apart much later than it was minted.

it also spent decades in a 2x2 tightly fit together. that would affect the amount of oxidation in the break compared to the surface. or it could have been forced apart. who knows.

Yeah, it doesn't really matter because it is an excellent find to have both pieces. I like it.

Very cool. Now for the two big questions: where did you get it and what did it set you back?

I have no idea what retail would be on this coin. It was listed at $30 for opening bid. I set my max bid at $60.

This is the 2nd coin in 2 pieces that I have seen. I own a 1947 Australian Halfpenny that is in similar condition.

Pics of my coin are here (taken in 2011):

I saw that one... but I just purchased a major error, so I have to let these ones slide by for a while... snap them up while you can!!
