I would appreciate any thoughts on the grade and condition of this 1865 3 cent nickel that I came across today. Thanks.

MS details, some slight corrosion spots. I love the clashing.

WOW. I have never seen a doubled clash before.
Very interesting.
Does anybody have an a theory about that. Would it be an event like a Mechanical Doubling on a coin, shift during a strike, without a planchet?

a lot going on in this coin. clashing, dark corrosion spots.

One of the most interesting parts of this coin is the contrast of really strong strike and lair detail at the top of the head and the extreme weakness in the hair at bottom by the date. Also, in the reverse, some areas of the "III" are really well struck and others are bald. Clearly there was not enough metal to fill the dies.

While interesting, it is not very pretty. I would say MS60.

Let's see:
-- die alignment off on the obverse (that's okay)
-- LOTS of clashing (that's okay)
-- no obvious rubs (neutral)
-- weaker than average strike as evidenced by areas with no detail (that's not okay)
-- "carbon" spots (that's really not okay)

Not sure how the TPG's would see it.

yeah, that obverse was really struck off center. really annoying if you come from stamp collecting world where that kind of thing really affects grading. I don't know why that isn't such an important consideration in coin collecting.

I have a 3 cent with this exact clashing. Very cool!

Tough to tell from the pics, but how is the luster? Id say 61 details..maybe a straight grade. Tough to tell from these pics

MS62, nice off-center multiple clash strike. 1865 is a "bonanza" year for error collectors, with strike quality ranging from mediocre to abysmal to "who let the drunk guy run the machine?" and the resulting plethora of clashes, die cracks and die breaks, die chips, Retained Cuds, rotation, etc.
