In doing a search for a particular date, I found a very nice looking AU50 coin and a very nice looking MS64. The cost difference is a little under 4x for the MS64BN. Should I save the money and go with the AU50 or go for the MS64BN? We aren't talking a lot of money. Like $30 vs $110.

Thoughts? Stick with "buy the best coin you can afford"?
Rest in Peace

I know a lot of dealers that say buy the best coin that you can afford . I agree with this . If the spread from AU-MS64 is only $30 & $110 then I would probably save for the MS-64 .

There's no right or wrong answer especially since we have no idea what coin it is or if it's part of a set or not. It's up to you and what you like better.

It's an 1897 IHC. I went ahead and bought the MS64BN coin.

Probably the choice I would have made too with the prices you posted. At least it spares you from having to upgrade it later on.

That's a good point. I decided to get 1951 and earlier Jefferson nickel proofs slabbed, so I was left with the decision of what grade(s) I wanted. I could save a decent amount if I went with say, PF64, and could finish them more quickly. I decided to get the best I could afford to get all in the same grade - PF66. Yeah, I could afford a '51 PF67, but not most earlier dates.

For coins in that price range, get the best of your reasonable options. I doubt you will regret it later.

I am a cherry picker, so,
my first motivation is to get the best value for money.
Nevertheless,
I have a stronger tendency to be a numismatist than a coin collector, and so I am more motivated by the coin itself.
So,
If the value is equal for price vs condition, I would always go for the lower graded coin,
and save the money for another interesting coin that may come my way.

Two coins in my collection are better than one in my hand.
