I've been collecting coins for 10 years and yesterday I went to a coin show for the first time in my life. It was the Central States Numismatic Society (CSNS) in Schaumburg. I was nervous because I didn't know what to expect, what to do, I didn't even know if I would find anything. Turns out I bought a few things from 2 dealers who were EXTREMEMLY friendly, pleasant, and full of knowledge. One reason I bought the coins was as a way of saying thank you for the time and knowledge BUT also because I like the coins. Dollar coins are my favorite but after yesterday, I'm thinking of starting a set of V nickles, Barber half dollars, and maybe indian head pennies. I'm considering lower grades because I have a very limited budget but I'm still not sure. Main thing is I had TONS of fun yesterday. AND I got to see coins I wouldn't otherwise see in person. I even saw a $500 bill. Can't wait til next year.By then I'll know exactly which nickles and cents I want.

Sounds like fun. Always is fun @ a show. V nickels are easy to find except for the keys. If you are looking for mid-low circulated grades (say F or VG), you will find them in buckets at dealers tables, in the half off boxes and in the 2x2 books. Except for the 1885, 1886 and the 1912 D and S you can build a nice matched condition set and never spend more than $3-4 per coin, or less. Just takes time.

Your first coin show! How exciting. That's the key. There are always "grumpy" dealers and "friendly" ones. When I moved here and attended my first show in this area I knew no one. I walked the tables for a couple of hours.without even making one single purchase. Then along the back wall I ran into a super nice, friendly and extremely knowledgeable dealer and spent my entire show budget with him. He is still my favorite and "go to" dealer when I have something I need. And he rewards the continued business with lower prices for me. He is great!!

You may even find some of those folks who may become lifetime friends. Those are the best finds of all.
I really am glad your first was successful. The only problem is you will be itching to get to your next one.

It was a great show wasn't it. Seemed to be well attended, friendly dealers, saw a lot of nice things, reconnected with a lot of people I knew, attended some very interesting programs and the EAC meeting, (missed the liberty seated meeting and Joe Boling's talk this morning on World War I paper and counterfeiting). Overall I had a really great time. Even managed by a few things. Saw something interesting I'd never seen before. I'm sure most of us here are familiar with the irradiated dimes, but I've never seen one in the original cardboard packaging. The die cut cardboard from Oak Ridge explaining about the radiation process that the irradiated dime and its holder fits into. Also saw one of the original NGC Styrofoam boxes, and there was a black NGC slab on the floor. Premium on the black NGC's is still going up, that one traded hands at the show for a premium of over $4000. I'm also looking forward to next year's Central States show. Praetorian, if you live in the area you can have a real treat next year. The ANA fall convention is going to be in Chicago in August 2019.

Glad you had a good time. There are smaller coin shows about twice a month in Northern Illinois and a few coin clubs. I think there's even a club in Chicago devoted to just Barber coins. Hope your next experience is just as good.

As I read this, I am just about to go to a coin show myself ! ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Home now. Picked up:- India 1919 8 Anna and EF for $50, Rome Republic Denarius of M Aquillius: Syd 557 Craw 303/1 BMC(RR) 645. VF, for $100, Vietnam bronze cash Minh Mang (1820-41) VF, for $6 Netherlands silver 1962 2 1/2 Gulden MS62, for $5. (Australian Dollars: U.S. equivalent prices about 75% of AUD.) Mixed bag as usual. I am a cherry picker, across the whole of numismatics. Went straight to Tony Byrne, he knows me quite well. He was curator of historic coins at the Royal Australian Mint in Canberra, for about 10 years. Nice guy. 3 of the above coins came from him, the Denarius came from an English dealer, last sale of the day a few minutes after the official closing, as he was packing up. He bought it for stock only a few minutes earlier, and sold it to me cheap, for a quick cash turn around.

Looks like you had a very good day at the coin show. I am unfamiliar with all the stuff you bought. We need an icon for "This stuff is way over my head".

If your in the Chicago area remember there are lots of coin shows all the time. For example Countryside every 2nd Sunday, Itasca every 3rd Sunday and many others. I think Palatine on the 1st Sunday of every Month. You'ld be amazed at how much cheaper it is at a coin show than ebay.

I am in the chicago area. I've never considered going to a coin show until someone told me about this one. What can I expect from the smaller, monthly shows in countryside?

Went to my first coin show a couple months ago as well and it was a lot less intimidating than I had built it up in my mind too. There really is so much knowledge in one little room. Even if you don't buy anything that particular show, the amount you will learn is incredible. In my experience, there was very little sell sell sell and more people that love talking about what they are passionate about and educating everyone they can. Really is a great community out there!
