Hey,

I know these are super common and I hope I am right that they are proof like sets? I see a lot of the ones in the plastic wrap around in my searching but I'm having a hard time finding the plastic holder type.

Are they "proof like" sets?
What's the difference between the two?

Thanks for any info

I can't speak specifically about Canadian sets, but US sets are often transferred to capital plastic holders similar to the ones pictured. It could be that someone created those sets from original mint packages.

@Ralfsnart What you have in the plio-film pack then in the brown envelope is the Proof-Like (PL) set.

The PL set was initially issued in the Pliofilm pack in 1961 and continues today in the soft, heat sealed package. Over the years, the PL designation was dropped for BU, the envelopes went from plain brown to pre-printed then hard cardboard but the coin wrapping is essentially the same.

The hard plastic holder is an aftermarket holder and someone has broken open a PL set to put it in the more protective holder. Since the hard plastic holder is post mint, you always run the risk that someone has swapped out coins with business strikes or circulated coins.

The original RCM PL sets were issued from 1954-1960 and were the 6 coins in a white cardboard holder, the Dollar was in the middle, and the whole pack was wrapped in cellophane.

Until 1967 the dime through dollar were silver, from 1968 on, the PL or BU set only contained base metal coins.

Thanks for the link Dorado. Definitely not looking at any of this as an investment, it is actually becoming a huge pain in the butt LOL.

So for all you big collectors growing up there in years

CATALOG YOUR COLLECTION SO YOUR FAMILY KNOWS WHAT IS WHAT!!

Thanks for all the info vonigohcr, that is awesome. I assumed that is what happened until I got to the 1960 plastic case, the plastic wrap covering the hard case is still sealed at both ends? I can't even figure out how to open them LOL.Pretty interesting non the less.

Thanks again!!

I cannot agree more. Where possible, you should also indicate what you paid and what a "reasonable" sale price is. I have been going through this recently as I am evolving my collection and it is frightening to see the spread between the purchase price and the reasonable sale / auction price is for most of the collection. The Canadian market is not that healthy with NCLT leading the race to the bottom.

This is important as should your inheritors not share your love of the hobby, they should understand what are reasonable prices so they don't get rolled by an unscrupulous estate liquidator. Not everyone knows that even a F-15 1948 Dollar commands a significant price. It is easy for someone to say the market is down and I can give you melt value for the silver and gold... If your catalogue is up to date, then your inheritors have the first step to knowing what is reasonable.

I agree to cataloging, almost every coin, set, banknote I own is on an excel sheet, graded, and priced according to ccn trends or charlton paper money or other.
