No sense bidding, seller doesn't ship to Canada.

If I'm not mistaken those regency holders carry a premium to some too.

Well the asking start price is well above my guestimate for what it was worth, I believe the 11 dollar sold for just over million Canadian, but there are a lot of 5 cent collectors. Although really cool, I believe this is just a wrong metal error

There was an article about this in Canadian Coin News a few issues ago.
Officially the mint reports that some 6,000 or so 1944 tombacs were struck and issued in early 1944. It could have been that they made them before the decision to switch metals was made, or, maybe it being the war, they decided to use all of the blanks they had on hand so as not to waste.

For reference, the same coin sold in 1999 at Heritage for 30,500 (hammer price). They do state in the information it was an RCM regular issue. If thats true it would be unlikely to be an off metal error. Interesting piece!

Quote: If thats true... And that's the key to the value of this coin, there are many reputable numismatists who believe it is indeed an off metal error and articles have been published in support of that theory of origin.

Even the 21, 50 cents piece where most believe there are about 50 to 80 left in circulation, you have everything from a G3 to MS 66 This coin is a one of kind very well circulated unit, if some 8000 where minted, most likely many more MS examples of this coin would exist, but it still is really cool

I'm very curious why they are trying the ebay route rather than Heritage. I suppose there is less spread that is taken. Anyone placing a bet on if this will sell for at least the starting bid? BTW, they don't ship anywhere. They will meet you in any major U.S. city.

Most likely Heritage estimate was no where near the owners starting price, it's maybe a 100,000 or slightly more depending on demand, but you never know with auctions

Too bad I only have 399,999 available, maybe he will lower his asking.

The ebay fees are WAY less than heritage at those price points as they're capped for sellers. That said it could just be an advertisement before it goes to auction at some point.
