Hello all, I hope am putting this on the right forum been looking at my BU roll of 64 pennies, and seeing alot of thick letters on them with traces of MD, is it common to have thick letter with MD?
Thick letters on 64's are design for the most part. What you're seeing on you example is more late state Die Deterioration. Metal flows outwards as dies wear, devices way widen some but the die widens. This effect is always towards the rim, a wearing of the device edge. Also some of the devices are even reduced on proof dies. You get all different sizes of dates sometimes: Doubled dies also make the devices different sizes:
