Obviously it took a hit or three. Can't tell if it's a D under there or an S.
If it's a D that's great because I have a 1969 that's missing one (thanks for the temporary replacement Doug).

Outside of the contact marks, I can't make out anything.

Food for thought concerning the punch(s) used this year. http://www.varietyvista.com/Doubled...201974-S.htm

Nice pix, but just further shows damages from hits. When you find something like this, first thing I ALWAYS do is check to see if there is a previous attribution. If I don't find it in one of two sources, varietyvista.com or coppercoins.com(toss in doubleddie.com too), then theres a 99% chance its just a damaged event from circulation or strike. This just took hits, major upper serif and slight on lower. The thick center was the style puncheon used.

Any "markers" after this point are meaningless.I use them only in a secondary or tertiarary mode of ID. First is shape and visible doubling, Second is LOCATION, LOCATION, LOCATION! Third once veracity is founded, the die stage and final assessments are made through "markers".

I have found very similar "markers" on coins having no error or doubling, they can be real foolers if that's all you're looking at!

(Doncha get tired of having to correct the "autocorrect" feature? Ahhhhhh!)

Doug, always appreciated!
Crazy, thanks. I think what I'm seeing is probably a combination PMD and a small break or two in the die, maybe?
