Quote: HeyMikeP's post should be made sticky, so that it sits at the top of the grading forum as a warning to anyone considering using NGC's 'conservation service'. I'm not a big fan of NGC, but to be fair they generally do much better work than that. Something went really wrong with how that was handled at first. That doesn't excuse the terrible job they initially did, but that's not really representative of what they have done in the past. As far as what they used, a number of their formulas are proprietary and the only way you'll get that info is to work in the lab or buy a huge chunk of the company and make them tell you

Whatever they use doesn't work. I suspect they or other coin doctors using similar chemicals have 'conserved' 95% of all surviving Seated dollars. Thanks for nothing. The conservation NCS performed on Heymikep's coin was certainly a horrible job. However, I don't believe that that's a valid reason to say that NCS is always bad. I have seen some coins that have been successfully conserved by NCS.
I'm interested to see what Ploopy's coin looks like after the conservation.

Update on the coin: I drove up to the Summer FUN show and sent it off for grading/conservation along with a monster toned Peace dollar I have. It's currently scheduled for grading/conservation and will post the grade and pics when it comes back to me.

Best of luck! Two questions: Did the PCGS representative offer any insights about what the problem is? And did they explain why the coin is a good candidate for their restoration services?

@MikeF, I sent it to NGC as I joined the ANA. As well, while submitting they didn't talk about the problems we just submitted forms. I kinda regret turning it in so early as Randy Cambell was there giving opinions and I wish I went to him.
