So, I get this back in change from Subway yesterday and am sure you all can imagine how I was feeling. I thought "Oh cool a Wheatie", flipped it over to see what year and I see 1943. My stomach dropped, heart pounded and sped home with butterflies in my stomach. No stick to magnet, weight correct for copper and so I grabbed my magnifying glass and excitement turned to bummed and mad. Just to confirm my first instinct upon closer inspection, somebody just took a 1948 and made it look like a 43 and threw it back into circulation correct? Why would someone do this?!! Jerk. Please someone tell me I'm wrong and it's real!! :) Thank you!

It's altered. Notice on the real 1943 the 3 has a tail (that's what I call it).

Wow! Looks deliberate. What an unusual thing to get back in change!

Correct indeed. I wonder how it ended up back in circulation?
Despite being altered, it's still a keeper for a circulation find, and a nice little curiosity.
Rest in Peace

We have seen a lot of fakes on the forums before:

Note how the die state is on the obverse? That is because it was struck with fresh dies.
