Let us know what happens with a dealer. I'm interested to know about the 2nd 1885 morgan. The first one looks like her neck touches the rim, but the second one looks okay.

Quote: Even some counterfeits can have some monetary value as long as they are sold as such. That's an important point. Part of the wonderful diversity of numismatics is that there's a collector for almost any variant. Certain counterfeits, especially "contemporary" ones (those created while the counterfeited money is still circulating) have a collector's value of their own, and at the very least it's possible to contribute to the public body of knowledge regarding them. As long as you know what you have, there's certainly a silver lining to this dark cloud.

I'd say every single one of them is fake.

Hi dans1950. Today is 6/28/08. Did you get your coins to a dealer for evaluation yet? I am really curious to find out what the final answer is on them......

I've only been looking at morgans for 2 weeks and they didn't look right to me. I am going to buy my RedBook soon. Monday is payday then it's off to Amazon!

I'm with conder101, they look like "copys" to me. The Flowing Hair and Morgans just don't look right. They look like they could be silver or silver plated though.

Hello Dans1950 Sorry to tell you, though I think you have guessed by now, these are all fakes. There have even been articles in the LA TImes newspaper about these fakes being sold in the skid row area of LA and local merchants reporting them to the police thinking they are from a stolen collection. One of my friends has this whole group plus about 6 you don't show, he paid $3 each just to have them as display coins in his store. If you have any doubt, just get a good scale and weigh them, they won't even be close to true weight. Nice curiosity pieces but not legit coins.

That second Morgan is pretty good. I had to bring up some large images from coinzip to compare it to. A few points to look at- Obverse- Look carefully at PLURIBUS. It shows thickness and extra material in the horizontal part of the L, and the S is very thick compared to a real coin. Second star from bottom, left side is almost gone with no associated wear anywhere around it Reverse- look at the rim between 12 and 1 o'clock. It's razor-sharp, so much so that there's actually a small ridge that looks like a casting line. Compare it to the rim at 5 and 10 o'clock, which is almost flattened- the huge difference in rim condition isn't reflected in the rest of the wear areas. Despite having the appearance of being worn smooth, the eagle's head still has very high relief, as do the arrow fletchings Wingtips are almost too sharply defined compared to the rest of the eagle In addition, the rim seems much wider on the reverse than the obverse. Strange to see a fairly good forgery like that mixed in with the one with the Indian Head cent portrait on it...

I'm sure that the easiest way to tell if they are fake, is to test if they are magnetic. If so they are fake.

"...test if they are magnetic" --or chocolate inside, that would be a clue too.
