I need help with this coin. I think it's an error but I'm not sure from what year. It has "191" and I know it was minted in San Francisco. Any ideas?

@rback002, first welcome to CCF. Second, best guess is that your coin was struck with a grease-filled die which caused the last digit of the date to be not struck up at all. Others who are more familiar with valuing these things will weigh in eventually, but this coin may be worth a little more with an unreadable date (as compared to one that is merely weak). As an aside, it is always nice to have full views of the front and back of the coin just in case there is something else about the coin that might not be on your radar.

If the VDB is under the vest it will be an 1918 or 1919. No intiials 1910-1916, best one can do.

Thank you so much for replying. I've uploaded pics of the front and back. I've collected wheat pennies and silver quarters and half dollars for years. I never noticed anything different until my daughter pointed it out to me. All info is greatly appreciated!!

Is that the top of a number 6 or just Pareidolia?

I thought something might be there but when I looked closely I couldn't see even a cast of a number. It looks like a cross cut.

Yeah, and when I compare with real number 6s, the top of this number starts way above the top of the 1s, so I'm just seeing ghosts.

That's why, as a novice, I'm unsure of it.

1910-S-1917-S If there is not VDB on the shoulder.

1918-S or 1919-S if there is a VDB. But the rim is wider, So I'm thinking earlier.

1917-S.

At first I thought it was a 19, but the 9 had a curve on the lower part of the digit. The one in the image didn't have. Also I thought it didn't have a VDB from the image provided.

So, it's a 1917? When I look at the "7" in the image it's closer but am I seeing it wrong? Like I said, I'm a novice, so not sure what I'm looking at.

Did you see the VDB on the shoulder? If not, it's probably a 1917-S. that is the only digit that would have the shape of the area where I placed a red arrow.

So it is a 1917-S. Always nice to be able to figure things out. (Things like this bug me, when I can't nail it down)
