While I think I have a good handle on the difference between doubled dies and Machine Doubling / Die Deterioration Doubling, I have yet to figure out how to tell a legitimate RPMM (outside of the 85-89 LMCs). I don't know if there is a known RPMM variety for this mintage and this is the first I've seen that shows any sign of doubling.

Hi,

That is very typical Machine Doubling on the D.

The same things that apply to doubled dies applies to repunched mintmarks. The major difference is that you are looking for rounded details that show some separation between the images on the MM itself. You also look for the typical notches and grooves that we associate with doubled dies.

In the case of a RPM, you are looking on the mintmark alone to find these things.

The flatness of the doubling to the left of the MM indicates as it would on any other coin that the detail is machine doubled.

Extend what you already know about Doubled dies to mintmarks and you'll have them figured out pretty quickly.

Have Fun,
Bill
