Got this in an antique shop in Vancouver's Chinatown as a kid. All I know is what a few of the characters mean, but that limited information doesn't really help me to identify what it is or when its from. Not even sure if its a coin or something else. It's 5.6cm (2 3/16") in diameter. Edited by Total_finder 05/09/2018 7:28 pm

It is definitely not a coin.

@TF, first welcome to CCF. Second, have you already looked online for a matching charm or token? I'm thinking that a site like primaltrek might be a good place to look, at least as a starting point. I note that nothing jumped out at me as a match in my quick check, but some of the pendant charms do have multiple holes.

@Spence Yeah I did a bit of research online before but didn't have much to go off. Thanks for the site recommendation.

Ok, well good luck and sorry that I can't be more helpful. We do have a couple folks who pop on occasionally who are somewhat fluent in Chinese, so consider checking back in a couple days. Also, it may be that knowing the meaning of the four characters in circles or the three in the rectangle could provide additional guidance.

Yeah no problem! I spent a few hours trying to find out what the characters were. If it interests you: The top left of the four circle characters is "Ma", a Chinese surname that literally means "horse". The bottom left was a weird one, "fú", all that came up was sacrificial clothing, or a kind of clothing in Ancient China. A character that is extremely similar and could possibly be this one means "market" or "city". Bottom right was a Chinese character for "part" or "division". Couldn't track down the top right. The top one in the rectangle is "jin", a character meaning "gold" or "metal" (supposedly referred to "copper" prior to 5th BCE).

Hi, I am from Taiwan and trying to help to identify this one. After google by the inscription on it the answer should be a fantasy coin made by a Japanese Otabe Ichiro during Taisho period (1912-1926). He is a guy who fabricated coins by his own imagination and history knowledge. Now the genuine works from him is rare and precious especially famous among collectors in Japan but there are also many counterfeits be made and traded in China.
