Guessing 2nd and 3rd as they seemed to have had more of a patina and now have some small spots.

Agree, numbers 2 and 3 appear to have been cleaned.

2 and 3 cleaned for sure. Photo lighting makes it tough for 5, so a definite maybe. 4 may have been dipped. If I was buying I'd take #1.

Mine is an unqualified opinion, but I would have tagged #5 as cleaned.

On the reverse, look at the flat areas inside of "UNITED" and further along the circumference from "AMERICA" ... the flat areas, most easily reached by a cloth (for example), are gunk-free (technical term) ... while the hard-to-reach bits, such as the 1mm nearest the rim & wings, are full of gunk.

Similarly, on the obverse, the difference between the exposed surfaces of "IN GOD WE TRUST" and the surfaces between & adjacent to those letters jumps right out at me.

As I said, an unqualified opinion, but the difference between the easy-to-reach vs hard-to-reach areas strikes me as an artifact of cleaning.

Q/ Why do I stand alone on this?

A/ I'm wrong - okay, but why?

Cheers,

Your logic is sound and I believe that has happened to a number of coins re: artificial cleaning.

Another possibility is that the coin circulated a bit, was put away and toned along with the gunk, for years -- then went back into circulation, leaving the toning and gunk in the crevices, while the exposed/higher areas were naturally "cleaned."

Thank you, two_tonevf35.

A credible chain of events, but does it ever happen that way?

The badly gunked coins that I have seen in circulation are almost always evenly gunked; once in a rare while, the highest areas will lighter, and I can see how rubbing around inside of a pocket or purse could do that.

But when the lower, flatter areas have also been rubbed clean, I think of fingers, not pockets.

The difference is between straight cloth (as in a pocket or a purse) and bent cloth (which begs the question as to what was bending the cloth).

Cheers,

I bought the 4th one. Doesn't look cleaned and the pictures don't do it justice, so I am happy, I guess. I would take pictures for you but my camera isn't good, I don't think.
