A friend thinks it might be cast. I wanted to ask you experts here if theres anything to indicate it.

Cheers!

I'm curious why he or she thinks that. I see no obvious signs of casting. It's important to remember, in any event, that fakes can be struck too - not all fakes are cast.

I think it's kosher and, in fact, allowing for differences in wear, lighting, perspective, etc., I think think it could be an obverse die match to the one at right, from CNG. Note the same doubled ground line with the same waviness, and the similarity in lettering.

To me this looks like a modern "reproduction" of poor quality from an artistic standpoint, but I'd have to defer to Bob L if he thinks it's genuine. Because of their high dollar value, they've certainly been forged.

I don't see any indication of it being cast and as Bob has pointed out with a picture of a known genuine example, they both appear to be from the same die's.

Have to agree. My first impression notwithstanding, that'd seem to be irrefutable evidence of its authenticity.

Agreed, but there seem to have been a lot of these somewhat bizarre looking straight-legged, piglet-elephant hybrids. A sampling from CNG:

Bob, great info. This one is faked a lot, but I did not see a match in the fake coin reports.

I think it is very difficult to recognise a good fake from a photo .I also thinh the coin is not from the same dies , I see a difference in the trunck and the head of the elephant , also in the legs .So it is for me very difficult to judge the authenticity of this coin . As it is an often faked and very expensive coin in this quality , I would try to find the origin and the quality of the seller . albert
