This question is not directly for photography but indirectly influences. I notice that most of the great photographs are made with the coin alone and not in a holder. Most of my coins (95%) are in the cardboard 2X2 holders. So to take pictures, I have to remove from holder, take pics and then return to another holder. I have seen some responses about using the flips. Are they an acceptable alternative to the 2X2's?

It depends on the coin, but I find I can shoot fairly well through cardboard 2x2s 80% of the time. Unless I need super detail or can't get rid of reflections I leave the coin in them. But yes, I have been known to waste a few. All 3 pics taken with coin in 2x2. The last using photoshop to mask out the cardboard.

How do you light your material? Or is it the camera? I do not see any trace of the mylar film. EXCELLENT PHOTOGRAPHS

I'm a bit eccentric when it comes to coin photography. I either use the room fluro on the ceiling or an LED flashlight bounced off the ceiling. Look here for more info on flashlight lighting. https://goccf.com/t/29384As long as there are no major wrinkles in my mylar I can usually get the shot. Camera is a 5mp Fuji S5600 with closeup lens. I always use full manual control. The shilling was with the fluro. These two are lit with a LED flashlight.

This is one that didn't work. Couldn't get rid of the reflections due to wrinkling.

I think is a personal choice. I use Flips only because I dont like the staples, nor the use of adhesive. Just make sure they are Vinyl, and contain No PVC. (Awesome pics)

Quote: Couldn't get rid of the reflections due to wrinkling. I started using 4 staples as close as possible to the coin as I could get and most of the time if it's the right size of 2x2 then the plastic is taut

I think most labels will identify whether or not it contains PVC (polyvinyl chloride). I first ran into PVC problems years ago when I was maintaining my baseball card collection. I had an entire set sitting in PVC pages inside a binder. I got scolded by a shop owner for using those sheets and I had to throw the lot of them out and get new non-PVC vinyl ones.
I did not realize PVC would have the same longterm effect on coins as well. Apparently overtime the PVC breaks down and emits hydrochloric acid which really can't be good for anything it comes in contact with!
