The 'Y' looks like a a struck through debris onto that devices. Coin wrapper damage on the head. Not listings of a DDO on 1988-D on Variety Vista:

Nothing on Wexler's site for that year either.

On the motto, you can see how die wear increased the size of the outer devices. Note the inside ones, then the outside. So just die wear is a factor on how the motto was altered with die aging. It is were hub doubling, the devices would start out being the same size, but when the die reached the same age as this, the doubled die devices would still be altered like this coin, but would have the doubling, but also be enlarged as well. Just what dies do when they age.

Heavily circulated. What I believe you are seeing on the Y is where it took a hit. Notice how the bottom of the Y is narrow? That's where it took the hit and the metal was pushed outward towards the T.

Actually the area you are referring to is part of vending machine/casino damage that affects all the devices, by rolling through the meck. What I was referring to was on the bottom part of the 'Y'.

That 1934 has seen less wear than the OP's coin. I get what you are saying, coop, but is it possible for the devices to become so worn that any doubling would be erased (for lack of a better term at the moment)?

Yes. On class 2 doubled dies, the doubling is on the outside edges of the devices. Die wear will remove them after MDS state. Even coin wear can remove these doubled dies. But, if you can find doubling closer in on the coin, you will be able to see I there. (Closer in on the coin means on memorial cents, the EPU or on the building)
