is a chore. LOL
I set a rather mundane goal of doing a US date set and I am having a hard time even staying focused on the easy to obtain modern stuff!
Why is there sooooo much neat stuff out there!?!? lol

@half, consider posting a thread here on CCF where you photodocument your progress. Sometimes having support can keep you interested long enough to complete your goal.

It is called the "Roseanne Roseannadana" syndrome. "Ya, kno'(while chomping gum) if it's not one thing, it's another..." (SNL, 1970's) I set my goal to replace all my circulated P,D & S mints with MS packs and have Proofs through 2009. Up to 2006(2007-9 too pricy still), BUT, But, but...what about all these nice Ikes, ahhh, up to 32 of 34 so far now and the SBAs too. Just not bouncing on the bed for the ATBs or those atrocious "Golden" dollars ...now that the cents and nickels are almost done, should I finish the buffalos? And now that I have the Quarters from 1964 on, maybe the 32-63's, and .....

Quote: Why is there sooooo much neat stuff out there!?!? lol I got bored collecting by date and collecting series for the very same reason. It's also why you can go broke too! I switched my collection to type coins and really collect anything that is interesting and has a neat numismatic history. That's the great thing about the hobby. Collect what you like and how you like...there's no right or wrong.

Finding the niche you like can take time. Just enjoy the trip and learn everything you can.
The most satisfied collectors are those that learn, not just what they spend.

Try focusing on U.S. classics . That for sure will get your attention in focus .

I started off with date sets. Got bored. Expanded into type sets, one country only. Got bored. Expanded into World coins. Got bored, still not wide enough. Expanded to include the whole of numismatics, to include ancients, hammered, milled and modern coins of all cultures. That was 40 years ago. Not bored any more. Along the way, I have also learned a lot about the histories of all the major cultures of the World, over the last 2,600 years. I get to own, study and handle the hardware of their economic systems. I suppose that the next expansion step will be to collect used credit cards! A focus? Very much yes, I do have a focus. The focus is the collection and study of coins, throughout World history in all cultures. Something like the approach to numismatics that a museum would take.

I don't try to stay focused at all. Currently, I'm working on a few sub-collections: 1) OFEY (one from each year) -- most recent pickups are just replacing US coins (and Hungarian denars and Lithuanian half-groats) in the yearly lineup 2) OFEC/OFEI (one from each country/issuer) -- most recent pickup is from Freiburg (Swiss canton) 3) OFEM (one from/with each metal/material) -- most recent pickup is a bimetallic coin from Kazakhstan with a tantalum insert 4) OFEG (one from/with each gimmick type) -- now looking for a cheap coin with a hologram, for example 5) Coins with elaborate coats of arms 6) Coins from obscure places with complex German-sounding names (fits in with OFEI) 7) Early coins -- now looking for electrum staters from Ionia or Lydia (but needs to be certified and not too expensive)

OFEC: One From Each Country Century Culture. Take your pick. My problem is that when I am in a work shed full of shovels, how do I choose? Actually, I have managed to do 'Century' (26 coins), mostly there with 'Culture', but a long way from 'Country'. Over a period of 26 centuries, the definition of 'Country', changes. Also have One of Each Shape (I think complete) Edge design (I think complete) Metal (almost there, includes alloys, don't have antinomy or niobium) Issuer (will never get there) Also have about a dozen pattern coins (no U.S.)

I suppose the early electrum stater (probably from Ionia) would complete my "one from each century" collection, which would then have 28 coins. Those antimony coins are too expensive for me. Also, hafnium coins are hard to find -- maybe someone besides Turks and Caicos will come out with a hafnium coin?

Hafnium? - Apologise, haven't got that metal, either. Just checked on Google - I don't collect fantasy exonumia.
