Good morning
I inherited my dads coin collection (prob 40 gold and alot silver)several yrs ago and become quite interested in coins now—i have researched my coins and have some questions for the experts
—coin grading companies—i have several coins that have quite a change in value from AU to BU condition—should I have my coins graded to get better idea of value and to determine if they are real(read alot coins counterfit esp through ebay and some dealers)—all my coins are RAW—my dad put his rating like BU/AU/EF/ect but he may have over graded them(most gold BU)
—i am worried about throwing valuable gold coins in a mailer and mail them to be graded(stolen from mail or valuable coin switched by grader)—guess I am not very trusting—what r your suggestions for grading coins
—i have a old non gold/silver coin worth about $200 bit really dull and I know not suppose to clean your coins but is there anyway to make it look better but not mess with value of coin(sorry cant remember what coin it was and at deposit box at bank
—sorry this long but new to this and prob will have more questions in future
Thank you—pete

to CCF. There are 3 trusted TPG's,PCGS-NGC and ANACS.
As a general rule the retail value of the coin slabbed needs to be at least $150. Before sending any in,post good photos here to see if we think it is worthy of sending in.

No there's four you left off ICG. Also a lot of people consider ICG to be better than ANACS

For high value ($200+) coins, having the coin graded by a reputable third party is a must to get the most for your coins should you ever sell them. If you don't plan to sell them, I'd leave them as is. Slabbing is expensive!

Take your time, post one at a time, and we'll help you as you learn

My guideline for submitting coins to a TPG is when I think the coin is worth over $300.

If you post coins at this forum, I'm sure you will get approximate values. You can then decide for yourself.

Good luck!

If you have a local coin shop, get to know them a bit. Without me asking, my local dealer once just openly offered to send coins in to be slabbed along with his submissions.

But as has been said - unless you are going to sell them, don't waste the money unless you personally like the looks of slabs. People here can give you a very good idea of what a company might grade it - all subjective anyway -not a science.

Also remember you can buy your own slabs to put your coins in. If you are concerned about keeping them in good condition, Air-tite, or similar, are great and a lot less expensive per coin.

Post some pics, ask advice here on the forum, and the experts here can surely give you some good advice.

Post pics and people here will tell you what would probably be best. Whatever you do, do not rub it even with a micro fiber cloth and don't put it in a chemical until we can help you after seeing pics. Removing or altering the surface metal of a coin can ruin its value.

It will cost you about $40 each for gold coins to be graded. You can send the coins to the TPG Registered Mail to and from with insurance. I like PCGS or NGC for grading. Take photos of your coins before shipping. Highly unlikely that your coins would be switched by the grading company. You do have some exposure shipping the coins. Registered Mail offers you the best protection, but each direction takes about a week to ship.

I see no purpose in having your coins graded and slabbed unless your planning on selling them. If your going to keep them, makes no cents spending money on having them put in a piece of plastic.
Rest in Peace

One problem you will have is that if you don't already have a fairly good handle on grading, you may waste a lot of money having coins graded that aren't worth the fees to do so. Posting GOOD quality images here can get you a lot of help to weed out obvious "do not grade" candidates. (Be advised though that in MY opinion, you really can't grade coins beyond AU from computer images. Many people will do so, but I do not feel it it really possible.)

Registered mail is your answer here. Absolutely the safest way to ship anything. Yes it is slower, but the package has to be signed for every time it changes hands so they do have, at least internally, a record of every person that handled your package and if it does go missing the last person to sign for it is the one held responsible. And theft of the mail is truly a serious offense. That makes every person very conscientious about getting that next signature. Registered mail can only be handled by certain persons and it can not be handled by temporary help. Overnight it is locked up. The loss of Registered mail each year can probably be counted on the fingers of one hand. An once the declared value of the package exceeds somewhere in the $1000 to $1200 range Registered mail is actually cheaper than insured mail. AS for being switched by the grading service, these services depend on trust. These are multi multi million dollar businesses that aren't going to risk their reputations and futures by stealing a clients coin worth a relatively small amount. They have handled individual coins worth millions.

DO NOT CLEAN IT. Even if you think it looks dull don't do it. There is a chance that there might be a way to make it look a little better, but it is MUCH easier to damage a coin and devalue it than their is to clean it and make it look better. It should definitely be looked at by someone with some experience in its present condition before anything is attempted. If you do send it for grading the grading services do have professional conservation services that can advise you, and they will not do anything to it without your approval.
