Hi,
I have a 1793 cent which recently came back from NCS with the "quest authenticity" label. The same with ANACS :( . Do you think it is worth to give ICG a try or is it waste of money?

A Lot of us specialize in foreign coins here while ANACS is mainly US coins. Any way for you to post some pictures here so we can take a look at it to give you a better answer? hmmm you did say cent didn't you

Hello DarkSun, There is a general consensus that the major grading services can be inconsistent in the numerical grades they assign to coins, especially for mint state grades. However, they are pretty good at identifying counterfeits. "Questionable Authenticity" is what they report when they decide that a coin is fake. If both NCS (the conservation and problem-coin division of NGC) and ANACS say this coin is a fake, then I would be 99% confident that it is, sadly, not a genuine coin. Can you post some photos? Perhaps some forum members could pick up on whatever features identify this coin as counterfeit. My condolences on the unpleasant news. Hopefully you did not purchase this coin as genuine.

The coloration reminds me of an electrotype, but I can't believe anyone would have made one of that low grade a coin.
The diagnostic features I can see are consistent with a S-2. What is the weight?
I suspect they may have bagged it because of the low grade and damage which made them doubt that they could authenticate it (or that it would take too much effort to do so.)

From what I see I don't see any problems. Got any pictures of the edge? My bet is the low condition and the problems (damage and cleaning) scared them too much.

I'm no expert, but that looks like a fine slug to me.

OK, that is probably why they bagged it. I see no trace of the vine and bars edge devices and even a nearly slick 1793-95 lettered edge edge cent usually shows a moderately good edge inscription. I doubt if you would get one of the top 4 TPG's to slab it. SEGS might since Larry Briggs is an experienced variety person and he does know EAC's, but I would submit it to SEGS at a show and bring it to Larry's attention when you do. Or you might try showing it to several top EACer or EAC dealers, and if they agree it is good get an opinion letter from them saying so an submit the coin and the letter to DGS for a signature slab. If Larry or the other EACers turn it down as being a fake then you are pretty much out of luck.
