There is buildup under just to the right side of this mint mark. Is this mark familiar?

@marylynnpreiss, first welcome to CCF. Second, any chance on getting a close-up pic of your cent? When I blow up this pic, it becomes too pixellated to see what's going on with that mintmark. Thx.

Split plating on the mint mark. After oxygen gets to the zinc it starts to alter the coin in that area: (very common)

Yes, that is a much better pic and confirms what @coop was saying. As he mentioned, this coin can be spent.

Thank you Spence and Coop and the others. I recently, (took about a year and a half) looked at about 250,000 pennies. I continue to do it because I enjoy doing it as a pastime. My question is, to the two of you, why, if there is only one out of 250,000, is it not more valuable? Thank you for your replies so far.

Sincerely,

Thomas

, it isn't valuable because it's not an error it's the coin rotting away and it'll get worse with time.

Depending on who looked through them. Not all collect the same things. But for value, it's worth what someone will pay you for it.

I agree with Coop's assessment. It's Split Plate Doubling. The coin in its beginning stages of Zinc Rot. The mint Mark will eventually fall off, causing the Zinc Rot to become progressivly worse, as the air causes it to rot even more.

Thanks so much for the replies. They help. In my humble opinion, I think coop's three penny set as an example of zinc rot is valuable, but what do I know. So, I'll look for a book on official mint errors, recognized as such by the coin community next. This should further my enjoyment of the penny hunt. Thanks again.

Sincerely,

Thomas
