I purchased set at estate sale but I noticed the spot on the nickle. I thought it was on the plastic but its on the coin.
The bag is sealed.
Is this an error?
I thought no mint mark on years 65-67 and why is the copper color? I thought nickels were made of nickel not copper.
Need help here?

Odd looking hit inside a mint set. It's a shame, however it does happen. Not a mint error. The damage happened after the coin was struck. It could be a chemical of some type on the coin or a defective planchet. Others will chime in here with their opinions.

Hi itsonlymoney !
That is not a mint mark, just a stain of some kind.

Nickels have a core of copper. Only the outside is a Nickel alloy.

I don't think it is from contact. More of a planchet issue. Might be a carbon spot. Nothing will fix it.

Nickels are 25 Per Cent Nickel 75 Per Cent Copper right from 1866 to date. There is no plating or core .

It's not an mint mark. It's Post Strike Damage (happened after it left the U.S. Mint). It's probably a carbon spot.

after all the input, I decided to open the set since it probably worth nothing with a damaged coin but once out of plastic this came up.
Is this also damage?

Before you took it out of the cellophane, did the cellophane have any evidence (an indentation or scratch) that something hit the coin?
