This might be an interesting view for some. Today I cut into a sealed 1964-D Nickel mint bag. I'm sure this is how most all truly uncirculated coins got beat right down to MS-60 or worse. My guess is that over 50+ years this mint bag has been tossed onto tables, thrown into cargo trucks, picked up multiple times, and even my simple lifting of this bag out of a box I could hear all the nickels inside clinking up against each other. Please give your opinion on grade. I'm the proud owner of 4,000 of them. This might be hard to believe but I'm actually more excited to have the bag itself.

If anyone who lives nearby to central NJ and wants to buy at face value 1964D nickels, PM me. You can buy up to 4,000. Otherwise I'm going to roll these and release to be free into circulation which is where they belong. My local bank cringes when I walk in for deposit...

If I didn't know it came out of a mint bag I would say AU50 at best. Kind of makes me wonder what "mint state" really means - it didn't come out of the mint like that, but yet technically it's "uncirculated".

I'm thinking the pic is not representing how the coin looks in hand very well. That said, 1964 nickels aren't known for their outstanding strikes.

That Mint bag is not original .It was first meant for 1963-D Nickels . I'm suspecting someone used the bag and put in 4000 inferior 64-D's ,then crossed out 1963 and stamped it 1964 . Notice how the font is different on the 2 dates .

Not sure about whether the mint bag was actually made for 1964 nickels. Looks like "1963" was stamped out and "1964" was added below "1963." Note the different font. That sure is one banged up nickel!

I can tell from the stitching that holds the bag together is all in the same. The same stitching is what closed the bag shut. My guess is that the Mint didn't through anything away and probably reused materials from prior years. The signatures appear to authenticate something official was happening with various check points so I'm going to say this came from the Mint and has never been opened until my grubby little fingers cut it open. My plan is to dump the contents and mount that bag into a frame for my wall. Or if I'm feeling really lazy, I have a special wall in my old house where I've been dumping old coins for somebody to find 100 years from now. I'll stuff that bag down the same hole. Let somebody 100 years from now appreciate the find.
