Hi all,

I was just making a hobo Penny and I realized it might not be safe. Breathing in microscopic metal shaving isn't my cup of tea.

Does anyone know if the shavings pose any danger?

Thanks,

Phil

I dont beleive it will be a problem at all so long as you are not huffing the shavings. If worried maybe consider doing it in a well ventilated area, using a quality particulate mask. Or maybe setup up a shop vac to have the hose directly next to the carving station making sure you have quality HEPA filter in the shop vac. If anything I would be far more worried about slipping and cutting myself with the carving tool than I would be about breathing in the dust. Good luck and post a pic of the finished product!

Nickel or penny? For Nickels I use a continuous wave carbon dioxide laser. The resulting particulates are harmless in small quantities.

At first I thought you were carving hobo PENNIES. I've never seen one. Do you have pictures?

Do you think a surgical mask would be good enough to prevent someone from breathing in the particles?

The laser sounds great. Is it one of the Jeweler's types ?

"For Nickels I use a continuous wave carbon dioxide laser."
Wow, that sounds like a far easier method than a few hobos sitting around a fire, filing away at their nickels into the evening.
