I am starting to work on a Barber half dollar Collection(mainly in the "VG" range) but recently ran across an ebay listing for a "Proof" Barber half dollar.

I had heard these are VERY RARE, so am surprised to see this listed, and the fact that it isn't in a SLAB makes it a bit suspect..

Here is the ebay link:

https://www.ebay.com/itm/1903-Barbe...263729849205

Is this a real Barber half dollar Proof?

And if there are really only 755 ever minted, wouldn't this be worth a LOT more then $900 starting bid (unless there is a reserve I don't see mentioned..)

Just wanted some experienced views on this.

Thanks.

Michael

Most likely a dipped or polished business strike. I would run from this deal.

Too clean with some evident wear in places - yes, looks like a polished business strike.

ok.. thanks.. not that I would have bid on it (or have that kind of money), but I definitely thought it looked "suspect"..
... should someone "report this" to ebay as a probable "fake" ?

I don't use ebay nor am I familiar with these proofs- but it says 14 days return...is it worth it to take a flyer?

Edit to add: even if it's real, you can get a low MS slabbed PCGS for less.

Sounds dicey to me. Unless you have a nearby trusted dealer to vet it, I'd pass.
Rest in Peace

Look at his other "proof" coins. They are not proof either. With several "proof" coins listed by guess is that he is familiar with the good old buffing wheel. Silk buffers can give this solid luster and you have to go to near microscopic analysis to see the results.

Give it a miss.
For a bid in the $900 price area, = no.
Looks like a 'caveat emptor' item to my way of thinking.

Such a coin is way out of character to rest of your VG collection anyway. I happen to agree with your collecting approach. We all have budgets of some sort or another.
