I was getting lunch at the taqueria I usually frequent. The burrito I get is $9 and change, and I usually just pay with a $10 bill and put the remaining 40 cents or so in the tip jar. Today, however, I noticed that the quarter seemed awfully bright... Turns out, it was a 1964 Washington quarter in MS condition. I've found a few silver dimes in my change in years past (although it has probably been at least 15 years), but this is the first time I have ever encountered something more substantial. It's in such nice shape that I have to wonder whether somebody liberated it from a collection or something, but I guess I'll never know for sure. It's hard to believe nobody noticed this coin, but I guess the younger generation probably doesn't even realize that coins used to be silver...

Woohoo! Always exciting to come across some silver in change. It doesn't happen often.

Nice, maybe it was just sitting in a junk lot of coins. Could have sat in a vault with other dollars for a long time. Remember silver was at 3to7 dollat for a long time.

Quote: I have to wonder It does make you wonder, right? My last silver thrill was 3+ years ago (posted it here. 1964 quarter too). 54 years somewhere, and all of a sudden, boom, it's in your change. My favorite story along these lines was around 1976 working as a soda jerk, a guy comes in and pays with a 1934 $5 silver certificate in pristine condition, not even a wallet fold. Weird stuff but fun when you're on the receiving end!

Nice find... Maybe some hungry teenager raided his dad's coin collection to by a taco!

Quote: I guess the younger generation probably doesn't even realize that coins used to be silver... Sadly, the younger generation doesn't even use coins! (I have two teens). A big silver found sure is a thrill, I can remember getting silver Kennedy halves in change from time to time back in the eighties. I did find a '64 quarter in my change jar a few months back, not sure how that ever ended up there as I have educated my wife and kids on coinage over the years.

I don't know if you guys are saying $9 is surprisingly expensive or cheap for a burrito, but it is a big burrito and in the downtown area near my office it's impossible to find any food for lunch that's cheaper, even from the food trucks.

Nothing special, just a normal 1964 quarter. But here you go:
