Not exactly a coin but I was hoping someone might recognize the initials. It looks like it has some age, so I'm really curious as to the source of this pin. Thank you!

It has some words on the edge of the back of the pin. I can make out 'MAY 17 1898 USA but there are about three words before that. I think the first one is face? Can you read what those first three words are? Maybe it was some event the pin was made for.

Or perhaps 1899 considering the date of the patent? I'm not sure, but agree that knowing the remaining text along the rim on the back would be helpful.

edit: Now that I really look more carefully, the word before May on the rim could be PATENT.

Well, in Pakistan it would appear that AFIU is an interesting acronym.

I looked on and around the date. I bet the answer is in here somewhere:

Oh dear, I hope that's not why it's yellow.

Words around the rim are a bit hard to make out but I tried:

(unknownword)PATENT MAY 17, 1898 USA

The pin blocked the company name in the picture, but it says Torsch & Minks Badge Co. on the back.

I have a few other pins that have a similar backing like this, all from different groups. I think the company mass produced these pins for different entities who then put their own designs on the pins, so I don't think any of the text on the back has any connection to the design on the front.

My best guess is it was made for a veterans group in one of the states.

Thank you! Nice to finally find the source. Looks like they don't exist anymore, must be the reason they don't show up on the internet.

@Petrus: How did you find that? I wouldn't have guessed any of those words (except the first one) and my image search didn't find any hits.
