Good evening all, I was just wondering if anyone has any thoughts on this Octavian denarius. The weight seems good, and nothing screams fake to me, but I figured I'd check to see if anyone has any thoughts. Oh, and I don't only buy coins on ebay, hah. I just like to look around before I make a buy

I'm not seeing any red flags on this one. The ones list on the fake report doesn't seem to match. My feeling is genuine.

Here's a comparison of the OP coin (at bottom) with one from the fake reports. For those with a Forum account:
http://www.forumancientcoins.com/fa...cat=0&pos=12

There seem to possibly be a number of correspondences, including the little ding at the lower right corner of the (somewhat unusual looking) carriage of the triumphal quadriga, as well as the details of Victory's gown.

Worth pointing out that the documented fake is listed as cast (which may or may not be correct), whereas the flan shapes obviously differ between the coins here. I suppose it's possible the documented fake could be cast from molds taken from a legit coin from the same dies as the OP. In any event, I'm always wary when details on a known fake seem pretty close to a coin for sale.

Seller registered in Germany. Coin located in "Spain". Private listing. Private feedback. $500 coin sitting at $17. What could go wrong?

Whoa, thanks for the insight Bob L. What a keen eye! That's good enough for me to steer clear

Echizento, based on what Bob has mentioned is your thought leaning towards fake now as well?

At this point I would have to say yes.Bob has a better eye for these things than I do. There are just too many similar details that match up with the known fake to say otherwise.

I would have assumed it was fake after seeing how cheap it is considering how good quality the coin is.VF+ Augustus coins are never really cheap.

Cheers
