Hello all,

I have found a really tiny silver coin as shown below. I think it is a coin from the Iturbide era but could not find anything about it. Looks like a coin of this size has never been minted.

Is it a later commemorative? Or just a medal? The texts should be clear enough.

It weighs 0.38 gram and I assume it is just 1/8 reale. The diameter is around 1/4 inch.

Thank you very much!

My guess is a medal. It has no denomination. That's my very uneducated guess!

It is not a coin. A lot of tiny brass/gold plated medals/ tokens/ souvenirs/ replicas have been issued, and this is one of them. I have something similar but it is of the Emperor Maximilian. My guess is that they came out sometime after 1970, but I don't know of any catalogue of them.

It's a "wedding token" - a popular issue that is given away at weddings. Usually has depictions of Maximilian and Carlota, as their love was rumored to be pure (which was very unusual for royal marriages at the time), but there are also examples with Agustin de Iturbide (your example), Benito Juarez and Aztec imagery. It's not from 19th Century, though. A lot of those were struck in the 50's and some are still being produced today.

Mike Locke had a nice write-up on these, but the site seems to be taken down.

A-ha! Internet Archive to the rescue: https://web.archive.org/web/20130305070724/http://www.calgoldcoin.com/mexico.htm

Your looks to be the example catalogued as "1823 Augustinus #2, same overall design as #1, but both dies slightly different."

Thank you very much you guys! These are very helpful information.

I believe mine is silver but not gold, and it has a smooth edge. Good thing is I got it at melt price so it's still a good thing to keep.
