Yeah I know, it's really strange. Unless there is some weird variety for this date/mintmark, I'm steering clear and emailing the seller.

Amac44 inversion wouldn't cause a mirror image to occur. an inversion causes the top to look bigger but is still readable as a "S" Richard

The 1896-S is one of the three keys for the Barber quarter series. This is probably a failed attempt at the alteration of an 1896(P) or an 1896-O.

The seller said he got it from his grandpa's collection, I'm obviously not going to bid, but without acting too aggressive, I respectfully suggested that he get an expert to look at it or get it authenticated.

The current bid is over $200, I feel real bad for anyone who ends up with this thing.

The mint mark looks like an ampersand to me.

I would not buy it. Stick to certified on this date. There are just too many shady people entering our hobby unfortunately. Just my opinion.

I would never buy one of these unauthenticated unless the pictures of the mintmark revealed it to be perfect location, the subtle signs of fakes were all nonpresent, and there was a good picture of the rim. Also, there would need to be at least a 7 day return policy so that I could take it to a reputable dealer.

As stated by David Lawrence in his book on Barbers, if you have an AG coin, it is probably good (real).
Looks okay to me, just a minor hit on the MM.

Actually weren't the mint marks stamped onto the working dies manually back then? That is why there seem to be so many variances in the mint mark location and size. I heard of a case when they made one die for the SF Mint they accidentally placed the "S" horizontally before correcting it with a second strike of a vertical "S". Could this have been the case here?

I don't know the 96-S quarter that well but I believe there was just one reverse die for the issue. If that is the case then if it doesn't match a known genuine specimen, well. . .
