I wasn't actively looking for this coin and was going through my change. Raphael version of Queen Elizabeth is more of my favorite. I was lucky to find TWO 1995 UN commemorative. Not something that happens often especially when finding one can be difficult.
This coin is quite 'charred' and I normally would not give it much attention. Except the year on this coin is 1985 which I couldn't quite remember if I had one in my collection. Of course, this is one of the coins that I had in my list for more than a decade. Mintage is supposedly at 2.7 million but it's supposedly a lot scarcer than what many think. I'm sure it has been mentioned a few times here. Didn't think I would see one - this is not going back in circulation!

My son collected about 30 of the 1995 UN 50th Anniversary 20 Cents, in the years after they were released into circulation. He spent them after about 5 years of keeping them.
In more recent years, I have seen none in circulation.
These days, the 1985 20 Cents definitive issue is a much scarcer in top grades.

I can't remember if I have one or not, but they were included in the 1985 Mint Sets, and there are quite a few single coins on ebay, so maybe not quite as scarce as hens teeth.

Probably a mint set coin - after 18 years of looking I'm almost certain that none were put into circulation. Still, good find though - if I want one I'm sure I'm going to have cough up more than 20c for it.

The 1995 UN 50th Anniversary 20 Cents may well have been included in mint sets, but my memory cannot confirm this, either way.
What I do know, however, is that they were definitely put into circulation.

Photo to follow... I'm a little confused after reading this and some of the subsequent posts ... if the heading refers to the 1985 20c coin then what has the 1995 UN coin got to do with this?

Sorry, I didn't make it very clear. I get stoked when I find any UN commemorative 20 cents as I find it somewhat uncommon. To find both a UN commemorative 20 cents coin and 1985 20 cents is a double win.
That said, I still need to take the photo... just sitting on my desk at the moment.

Hi all The 1995 UN 20c wasn't ever issued in any mint set, only in rolls and into general circulation, and maybe some special issue PNC ?. However, the 1985 20c is only a Mint Set only coin and was never released into circulation by the RAM.
Interesting, for many years I've maintained that there weren't any 20c platypus coins issued into circulation by the RAM from 1983 to 1993 and 1995 - 12 years. I think now, finally, collectors are realising that this is the case.
Nice find gxseries although the 1985 20c has done a few too many miles. Crown casino in Melbourne used to be a good source for finding coins not issued for circulation by the RAM. It used to be - might still be - the ideal place for crooks to dump many coins which they illegally " acquired " from collectors' homes. I was lucky enough to get a few near new 2001 Navy $1's, amongst others. I always found getting a " pure " gunk free 1983 20c hard to get because of poor storage of the red PVC wallets, and about half of the 1985 20c in the mint sets can have a slight to complete ugly grayish tone either on the reverse, obverse or both.

Makes you wonder where RAM gets their figure from. Supposedly 1988 20 cents was released for circulation - mintage of just 200k...

Yeah I'm not sure about the 1988 20c piece - if there are mintage figures I can only assume they were produced but they probably suffered the same fate as the 1983 and 1984 20c pieces. Certainly I haven't found one in change either.
