It looks like trails to me. Didn't someone post something similar with a 1999 cent a while ago and trails were on the date 1999? Seems to ring a bell somewhere- maybe it was on the Coneca site and MR Neff responded. I know I've seen something like this recently- anyonelse remember?

Definitely trails. BJ Neff would be interested in this one. He may already have this one listed or it may be new to him. Post an image on Coppercoins.com/ and you may reach him there. But it is a nice one.

I would think something more likely to come from the polishing of the die.

Very strong manifestation of a trail, lets wait for BJ Neff to comment on this one.

Sorry that I have ben away from this forum for awhile, just been tied up with other stuff. To the coin; it is a trail die and a rather strong one at that. However, I am not to sure if it is listed. I just went through the 50 + 1999 Lincoln Cent dies that have trails (or wavy steps) and did not see it. Presently, I am up grading all the photos of the trail die files (650 files) for inclusion onto the CONECA web site and it will be open to all to view. The reason for this is simple. These anomalies are a variety die, similar to but yet not like a doubled die. If you can and are willing, I would like to see this coin so that it can be entered into the files. I can be reached by sending me an email through the forum. Thanks. edited to remove email by moderatorBJ Neff

I am pretty sure that is 1998P-1DER-027T, with trails in an offset direction of 250 degrees. You may be able to see a small die gouge on the outside of Lincoln's ear, just before where his side burns begin

Mr. Neff, not sure if I see a die gouge or not. Everything seems to match with the photos on the Coneca web site. Impressive collection. Any idea of a population for this coin?

I'm glad someone posted something about this "trailing" I never heard that term before but I do have a few canadian quarters with that exact same thing on it. The trails on mine run from the top of the antlers all the way to the rim. Is there really someone who keeps track of which coins have different errors ( if trails are considered an error? )

Trails are a variety since they were put on the die during hubbing.
I would very much like to see pictures of the trails on the Canadian quarters or if it is possible, to see the actual quarter. I am aware that the Canadian Mint used single squeeze hubbing since 1979 and by all reasoning should also have trail dies. If these are in fact trail dies, this is a major break trough for this type anomaly. If possible, can you please contact me through this site or CONECA forum (I am one of the moderators [wavy steps]) or through the CONECA home page (I am the membership chairman).
Oddly enough, I can not post my e-mail address on these post which I question since others can and have done so. But that is not the point, please get a hold of me if you can.
Thanks, BJ Neff

I forgot to answer the question. I do believe that the die gouge is there.
Nice find.
