Hi all, I'm new to the forum, but have been on the stamp forum for years. I found this 2002 20c with what appears to be a die crack through ELIZ. Opinions would be greatly appreciated

Nice crack. That die was just about to start making some big Cuds.

Can you tell if the line is raised above the surface of the coin?
It appears to be incuse to me, and if it is, it's not a die crack.

Ah, yes, that makes sense Nevol. It is incused, under the letters, whereas a crack would be raised. What is it called?

Just going by the image, it looks like a post mint gouge to me, and the part that would have been through the letters has simply been worn down after 16 years in circulation. So my opinion is PMD, Post Mint Damage. It could also be a strike through foreign object where the line that would have been through the letters has been worn down, but strike throughs are usually fairly easy to detect and to my eyes, this isn't one. I'm sure there are some other possibilities as well.

I thought it might be a strike-through too but it's hard to say from the photo.

Impossible to tell just by the pic if it's PMD or Die scratch. Has to be viewed with a 10x mag..

Sorry, it's the best I can do. Being a philatelist, we scan everything, and that's a 1200dpi scan

Some folks are getting confused about what a die scratch is. Take a look at the 2nd post in this thread: http://goccf.com/t/60427&SearchTerms=die+scratchAs explained by Coop, a die scratch will produce a raised mark on the coin and the OP has already said this mark is incuse, so it's definitely NOT caused by a die scratch.

w/ Nevol, was gonna correct the same wrong idea. Note also between the letters LIZ the lower portion shows raised metal, caused by a Post-Mint scratch.
