I have searched this for a few days with zero luck. Please help educate me on what these could be (confirm what I'm thinking).

A: 1984D, feels fake. weighs 9.4g. When dropped from 5 inches on to another KHD, it just "thuds", dull sounding. Also, if you are looking at Heads, holding the coin on the edge near "L" and "Y" of liberty, spin/flip the coin over, tails is rotated 45 degrees left. If this is a Magicians coin, how do you use it? if it is a counterfeit...what to do with it?

B: 1996D, weights 10.8 grams. Has nice toning (I guess that is what it is) on the Heads side. The tail side is worn evenly around the edges. The edge of the coin is smooth, without evidence of any reed work. Would this be a mint error? If so, how do you assess a value?

Once again, thanks for all the quick and positive feedback.

That's interesting. The one from 1996 D looks like it was purposefully altered on the reverse. It looks like someone shaved off the reverse.
Errers and Varietys.
Rest in Peace

The 96 looks like a start of a Dryer Coin or one used in a mechanical machine(vending/slot) and would be w/in tolerance of 11.3g. The 84 may be a bit underweight, a thin rolled copper core perhaps, the details do appear "mushy" like a thinned planchet may show. Doubt if counterfeit, would cost more to produce one than worth!...take a blade and score in between the reeding. Wee if there is a copper core inside.

Magician's coin - here is a previous post and link of one being made:
https://www.coincommunity.com/forum...y_ID=1461535

To separate the front from the back, either buy an inexpensive "Bang Ring" (do some internet searching), or else put it into the bottom of a drinking glass and shake it such that the coin repeatedly hits the walls of the glass at the base. The two halves will likely separate.

Google "Scotch and Soda" for the normal trick this coin is marketed for.

I found 10 of these when roll searching ~370,000 half rolls.

Some are Mexican Pesos and some are British Pennies

A closer view show the reverse had been altered:

Coop/Earle/All,

Thanks for the quick input. The illustrations that you posted and Scotch and Soda reference help me confirm what I thought. Trick Coin. I was able to separate it without ruining it.

You all rock!

Thanks for teaching this newb.

Glad to help. Yours is a Peso correct (hard to see in the pic)?

The glass will not ruin it. I supposed eventually the rim will show wear - but it would take a lot of using the coin. I bought an aluminum bang ring, I think, for 2.00 on ebay years ago.

Now have some fun. Put the empty shell in your hand, OBV up, over the other coin. Explain to someone the odd coin they might not recognize is a peso/British penny. Tell a person you can make one of them disappear without touching them.

Ask that person to hold out their hand, and while moving the half onto the top of the other coin, pick them up quickly, press them together, place them in the other person's hand, and quickly close their hand into a fist

Do whatever eye candy motions you want and then tell them to open their hand to give you the peso.

Even stoic people tend to give a very puzzled reaction when they find only the half.

Better yet, get a duplicate of the peso/British penny and pull it out of your shirt pocket.

Earle, what I meant about ruining the coin was by me trying to figure out how to separate them myself. The coin in glass trick worked.
