However, I'd like to think of this coin as commemorating the 50th anniversary of the start of the seige of Magdeburg in 1630. This would be an image of one of the (unsuccessful) defenders pouring molten lead or boiling oil down on the Papal Army which was laying seige to the city in 1631. This was one of the high points of the 30 Year's War. |

@numisrob, Charles II's monogram reminds me of the biohazard symbol.  Here is a 10 Pfennige from the German State of Bavaria dated AD 1679:   "If you climb a good tree, you get a push."

That is a vibrant picture, but a more mundane explanation is that the name Magdeburg can be broken down into the two German words Magd and Burg, meaning maid resp. castle. So Magdeburg = "Maiden Castle". Now, that is not necessarily the actual origin of the city name, there could be other roots for the "magde" part of the name. In any event, the city weapon and seal has at least since the 13th century been a maid standing on a castle wall. It still is, the modern version looks like this:  |

@pepactonius and @erafjel, thank you for indulging my question on that Magdeburg coin. Especially for the central European principalities in the 16th and 17th century, I always find these devices/symbols provoking questions about the history. Maid + castle makes sense from an etymological viewpoint, but I also wonder if the wreath she holds has something to do with peace or victory in the 30 Years War context, as mentioned by pepactonius.  Tomorrow I will have something less ambiguous from a part of Europe that's been less represented than France and Germany. Edited by tdziemia
