Great jetons! And thank you for the reminder of that interesting discussion. I have similar to @petrus' last coin, a 1622 ort of Sigismund III, Bydgoszcz mint, Shatalin BD22-50. It is hard to imagine how many of these 1622 orts must have been struck, as just at WCN 100 of these have sold in the last 12 months  .   Edited by tdziemia

Harderwijk (a harbor town on the Zuiderzee) flourished like most towns in the Netherlands during the 17th century ("the Golden century"). All towns were connected (directly or indirectly) to the North Sea or Zuiderzee (now closed). There was intense trade between Dutch towns and various countries in North & Eastern Europe. Trade occurred via a special type of ship invented by the Dutch: the flute.. This ship was fast and could be operated by less crew per tonne than the competing ships from French, Flemish or English competitors; so the Dutch had the lion share of the bulk transport over the North and East Seas. Tonnage was carefully registered by the toll point in the Danish Sond. One of the most important goods needed in the densely populated Netherlands was grain, Amsterdam became the main port for grain trade in Europe. Dutch silver, examples shown below, were carried in massive quantities to Poland, Baltic States and Sweden, in order to buy grain. The two examples are "Dutch Rijksdaalders" from Zeeland, 1622, Delmonte 641 produced only for international trade as such they represent early examples of Trade dollars I picked them up from a recent auction in ..... Poland !   |
