I am not new to coin collecting per say but I am new to taking it a little more seriously. I am looking into buying supplies to start my new outlook on collecting. I am very unsure what to buy. Personally my thoughts were between the cheap and simple: Cowen's Mylar Cardboard Flips - 2x2 or the more expensive and attractive: Lighthouse Quadrum Intercept 2x2 Coin Holders. I am not sold on either so if you have thoughts on either or another product by all means share.
As for what I will be collecting (I'm thinking this might help people have an opinion on things.) is this: I am 28 so hopefully I have some good collecting years ahead of me. I am hoping to collect Pennies, Nickles, Dimes, Quarters, Half Dollars & Dollars as far back as possible as well as collecting current and future years. Now as for condition my thoughts are kinda "just mine" in the fact of I figured Pennies I would try and collect BU from like 1959-Present but I'd be okay with the Wheats and Indian Heads being less than BU, cause they can show some age. (To me certain age is beautiful for instance I have no issue with the Rainbow Toned Morgan's Silver Dollar) Now I'm not crazy if I get a BU or Almost Uncirculated you better believe I am taking it....But I digress.
Sorry to be so long winded but I felt the more the history or understanding my thoughts the better someone's opinion might relate.
Thanks and Look forward to hearing all the great opinions.
Personally I'm a fan of the 2 by 2 flips without staples. I know that sounds weird but I put the coin in a 2 by 2 and slip it into a binder page. Never had a problem with anything working loose. I like the clean look of it. If I ever need access to the coin, I just slide the flip out and open.
Edit: Forgot to welcome you to the Forum. You've come to a great place to share and learn.
I have considered those but I was in fear the adhesive would mess with the coins. So you have had no issues for lack of a better word "adhesive sticky" getting on your coins or anything? As well as no notice of the adhesive having anything to cause harm to the coins?
Cause I know with my OCD Staples might bother me. That is why I looked into something else.
My question would be the use of the storage. Meaning, are you wanting to protect "forever" or do you plan on repeatedly viewing what you collect? It does make a difference, and sometimes you may have to compromise on your intent. Personally I for one, don't give a rip about storage forever, if I did, all my collections would be sealed in airtight media and placed in an environmentally controlled vault, what most would consider long term investment. I would much rather be able to view, work with, even handle my coins.
Most of my sets of contemporary denominations are in Whitman Albums specifically designed and laid out. (Reason is cost, budget constraints)These are now complete with MS and PF sets (cracked)1964-2009 and not necessary for upgrades. My older sets (IH, LWC's, Shield-Jefferson nickels, Mercs) are also Whitman album but designed to fit my own pattern(used blank pages and labeled accordingly)and subject continually to upgrades.
I use standard 3-ring binders and vinyl pages for all my Special Type sets(Expanded 7070, year sets, Error coins, Old HTT's, Oddball coins), Slabbed coins, Currency and Special Notgeld coin and currencies of post WW1 through WW2 Country and occupation scripts). I do use 2x2 w/ staples, but always close the staples! In some instances where a coin is too large I use mylar flips, coin gose in page slot with an insert in other flap OUTSIDE the slot, just lift up to view and see whole coin with info.
These are all kept in standard storage media because this is an evolving endeavor. Adding to, arranging, cataloguing, selling/buying, all are quite active and would be an absolute PIA to have to mess with a hard cased storage system. Maybe if I had heirs that gave a crap about my collections, but all that matters there is the hassle it will be to run a coinstar dump.
I don't feel I care about "forever" I like you have no one to pass them too and I kinda personally feel all coins will eventually tone or wear in some form. No matter how many steps you take to preserve them.
I had looked into the Albums but I believe mine were Dansco and people were saying the plastic slides that cover the coins caused scratch marks on the coins if not careful. So I wasn't sure about them.
The slides can do that if not careful, but I've had no trouble when putting together all my albums with the PF/MS coins, handling is the key. Albums like this: And the special set/slabbed are in a Guardhouse Pocket page like these:
As I said, I use my own scheme on dates, save space and can combine different types(shield/Liberty/Buffalo) in one. Here's the mylar flips, these are 2x2 in size, but called flips:
So Crazyb0, the mylar flips, how do you keep the coin from moving around and getting damaged? Cause those look interesting especially in the 2x2 binder pages?
Quote: So this may seem like a stupid question but if no staples and no adhesive what holds them together? I didn't know there was another option.
I just put the coin into the 2 by 2. hold it together, and slip it into the binder page. No staples, no adhesive, no problems. I'll take a picture in a little bit.
