*** Edited by Staff to Add Year / Mintmark / Denomination to Title. Titles are Important! ***Regarding the Lincoln Cent, what is the significance of the wide A M compared to the Close AM? Secondly, what is the significance of the large date compared to the small date on such coins? Do either of these errors relate to specific dates and is there a sure fire method of determining each error? I am obviously a novice yet this is quickly becoming a passion. Thanks for your time and guidance

First, I recommend using the search box to find previous threads concerning your questions. These are very commonly discussed topics here. Second, those are considered die varieties, not errors.

Yes, small date/large date and wide/close am only apply to certain dates. All 1960, 1970-S, all 1974, and 1982 Philly and Denver mint Lincoln cents have both large and small date variations. The only valuable ones are the 1970-S small date and the 1982-D Copper Small Date, the rest are common and not valuable. The 1970-S small date is a rare variation of the design. The 1982-D Copper Small Date was not supposed to be struck in Copper, it was supposed to be struck in copper plated zinc, this is an error. The Close AM reverse was meant for all 1993 cents and the Philly and Denver minted cents from 1994-2008. However, this design was accidentally used on some 1992 Philly and Denver mint coins and some 1998 and 1999 proof (S mint) coins, these are also accidental design variations and are valuable. The Wide AM reverse was meant for Philly and Denver coins up to 1992 and proof coins from 1989-1992 and 1994-2008. However, this design was accidentally used on some Philly mint coins from 1998-2000, these are accidental design variations. There is a rare 1988 and 1988-D " Wide AM" but all 1988 coins are Wide AM. The rarity is actually a design change in the designer's initials FG, yet people still refer to it as a Wide AM. http://www.varietyvista.com/01b%20L...arieties.htmhttp://www.varietyvista.com/01b%20L...arieties.htm

These are the coins that you need to be on the lookout for.

Isn't it 89 for FG? Probably wrong, tired and wiped out Tonie?

This group of people are awesome. I left one site cause I felt like they looked down on people who asked questions and didn't know certain things. Great job people, you make people feel at home here and we really appreciate the time you take out of your lives to spread this knowledge!

Thanks to everyone but especially Tanman2001 and I could not have said it better myself so I will adopt the words of Yellzaboff as quoted above. Now I must become skilled in discerning these variations. Thanks again everyone. A site made great by its members!

Quote: Shouldn't that be all 1960 Oh yes, I forgot the 1960 small/large dates. And yes all 1982-S coins are large date. I'll fix my first post. 1960-P,D, 1970-S, 1974-P,D,S, and 1982-P,D. There are two date variations for the 1974 coins, not many people know about them. See ODV-030 and 031 on the link I posted earlier. Neither of them are more valuable than the other.
