There should not be a D in that location. It almost looks like the dime took a hit by a nail on the reverse. Can you post an image of the reverse in that area?

excuse my ignorance but wouldnt a hit by a nail or anything from the other side of the coin leave a clear deep indentation for it to show on other side?

It would, that is why I asked to see the reverse to eliminate that as a possibility.

Looks to me like a late die state that was harshly cleaned and prob had heat or acid put to it at one point. The "D" is some type of PMD. Some sort of bag mark, or hit from an object. While it usually does show a little on the opposite side of a coin, this is NOT always the case.

But I don't agree that it was damaged by acid. That "extra mint mark" is just Post Strike Damage (it happened after it left the U.S. Mint). It's not an error. It's a damaged coin worth face value.

Really confused.
Why would anybody want to clean a coin doesn't that take more than half the value and use acid to do it ,that destroys the die clad AND leaves corrosion burns. And what type of acid unstead of damaging coin somehow forms a letter without acid damage around the letter. Also I understant PMD a scratch, nail picking and a hit all leave indentations and groves that damage the coin, what type of PMD leaves a letter that relief instead of a scratch or dent. Do you have any examples of what you are saing.
