1942 Wheat Penny....what Caused This?

I assume this happened after minting but I'm not sure why I can still see letters in the cut line so I figured I'd ask.

Look at this coin I see struck through cause the OS and RS has same 1 spot did not flatten..that my though but maybe I am wrong..experts will chip in and give you right answer. Good luck..nice coin though..

I can say that the coin shows PMD, for sure. It looks a bit different because it was circulated after the damage and that rounded off corners/edges, etc.

with spruett001. PMD. Perhaps some wire cutters were used on it, then more circulation rounded the corners.
A strike through would be very difficult to produce matching damage on both sides of the coin.

To CCF! It's not an error coin. It's Post Strike Damage (it happened after it left the U.S. Mint). The metal has been pushed over and flattened.

@Cooper1109, first welcome to CCF. Second, you can see a remnant letter R precisely because this coin was damaged after it left the mint. When someone squished this coin, the metal was displaced and a little bit of that letter continued to show through.
