The area on the fields around the devices are actually the flat face of the die with the devices being incuse. These edges of the devices are subject to deterioration, chipping and just getting dinged when cleaned off. This is where grease is introduced into a device. Those area are in that same direction. Die flow is the cause. I can can enhance something that wasn't the were the die was fresh. What can cause I to appear before a device you may ask? An older die scratch can start a die flow line. Die scratches flattened quickly on the open fields. But near devices they remain longer. In side on a device a lot longer.
