Ironically enough, at my favorite coin show of the year (Colorado Springs) I only ended up picking up this 3CN (I was sort of drained and ready to go home after the ANA Summer Seminar and wasn't much in a buying mood that day). Yes, it's the most common date, easy to find, but the look is exactly what I look for. Plus, it helps when the dealer undergrades the coin and gives me a great price!

Okay, I'll give you guys some hints up front. Don't guess too low so quick. Look at the dentils, the cheek, the tips of the leaves (high points), etc. There is no luster on the coin and it appears to never have been messed with (appears 100% original to me) with no problems.

Oh, and here's a bit more irony. These are scans so the color and details aren't perfect. I took the digital photography course at the ANA but I don't have the time to set up my equipment right now. Plus, I do have to buy some more stuff to do it right.

The flat spot in the curls and in the leaves correspond to the same place on the coin front to back. The Mint had striking problems bringing up the high points and this is evidence of just that.

Geez,-Not-Another-1865-3CN! Geez,-Not-Another-1865-3CN!

Hi Prethen,
Well, you're giving out a lot of hints that should narrow down the grade choices. If there is no luster, that rules out an AU. Even EF-45 should have traces of luster remaining. However, with inadequate striking presssure metal flow would have been reduced, leading to weaker metal flow lines. Without strong flow lines, luster would be substandard so choice EF might still be possible for this coin.

So, I'll say EF-45, weakly struck.
Rest in Peace

EF-40... nice common date type coin

If you paid over $20 but under $30 you did well...under $20 a steal!

This coin is a rock solid XF (+). I bought it as if it were a VF20! The funny thing is that this coin is actually not quite as common as those found with die clashes as this appears to have none. Plus, the date does not appear to be repunched. It's simply a plain ol' 1865 which is a scarcity in it's own right!

I really like the looks of these coins. I am not that familiar with them but it looks like something I could deal with collecting as the pricing on them is not utterly outlandish for my tiny budget! Have you amassed a pretty decent set thus far?

I have all but the 1884 and 1885 business strikes and 16 (I think...maybe 15) of the Proofs. Plus, I have a number of duplicates of those either I obtained for very reasonable values or those that I consider better dates.
