Hello. Why is the color of this coin different? Is this some kind of die trails found in the motto WE TRUST?
Thank you.

The marks that you thought would be trails is just die wear and die flow. This happens on coins made from later die states.

Color, could be several things. But I feel it is post mint cleaning/heating/anything that caused the difference in color.

Thanks Coop. I am sending you another image of a gouge on the ear of Lincoln - from the same coin. What is this?

Sorry. Image is too small to help you with right now. Maybe a larger image might help.

Hi Coop. Hope this picture helps. The gouge is located behind the ear. You will find it by drawing a horizontal line from 9:00 towards the ear.
Thanks

Hi,

While this coin may have the appearance of a plating error, I lean more toward it being an unusual form of toning. It could be due to heat but the exact reason, of course, can not be identified.

The reason I lean toward the toning idea is that the points of wear are revealing a copper color. If the copper were weak or missing, wear would reveal more of the zinc rather than the copper.

Thanks,
Bill

There are a few raised areas in that area. So it may just be a little orange rind. Nothing too exciting. It may be a small plating separation that is making that area raise.

Thanks Bill and Coop. I am looking for that other coin with the same toning. It must be the weather down here where it is so humid. But then again I may be wrong. But the toning has not affected the rim which shows a copper color. Does anybody have this kind die flow too?
