Hope this is correct forum—i want to add some coins to my collection currently couple of franklin halves—dont live near any coin dealers —i dont know enough to determine fakes or cleaned coins—any recommendation for where I can pick up coins such as reputable mail dealers or other avenues that may have reseonable prices and not slabbed—thanks

When starting out with a new series, it is good to look at slabbed coins for an idea of what is legitimate and what is not. This way you can educate yourself until you can tell for yourself.

Interesting thing though...now that you mention it. I own quite a few fake coins I deliberately bought from the Chinese to study them. I have had quite a bit of experience with fake coins. However, I do not remember ever seeing a faked Franklin.

It might be they are not faked as much (at all?) b/c there is not really one key date that would bring in a huge return if it could be sold to scam someone.

Common date silver dollars are faked, as are ASEs. But I think this is b/c these coin types are more noted, overall, as representing value in the coin hobby.

I am of the opinion the raw Franklins you see on ebay would almost certainly be real. There are tests you could apply to it to make sure. What is called the tissue test is simple. Search for it on this forum. Doing a search for fake Franklins on the internet also brings up very little.

Just post pics of one here and we can help you.

good to hear about fake franklins—i still worry about cleaned and fakes with some other coins such as silver dollars—on ebay I could always post the coin here and from what I understand now get 30 days to return if not satisfied—i will have to look up the tissue test—i read about the magnet slide test and sure dont want to do an acid test and mess iup a coin

Franklins are not rare coins and you don't really have to worry much about fakes. There are simple tests, like how they ring, to see if they are made of silver. Investing in a scale is also quite helpful for this.

If getting a hold of them is really an issue, you may want to try the for sale and wanted sections of this site. See what people will offer them to you for.
