BTW - it may sound very off the wall, but the tip of a porcupine needle can be used to clear the gunk out from the center of the MM on your coin. Most quills are much smaller than a toothpick and are soft enough they do not scratch coins.
Where do you get porcupine needles if you don't have one of the critters as your pet (and no local road kill?)...

The only time I have seen a scratch from using a quill has been the very rare occasion when the gunk has a small grain of something in it that's hard enough to scratch the coin's surface. When I put the quill into the gunk to lift it out, the grain gets pushed against the surface while being moved. After hundreds of coins this has only happened a very few times.
