Picked up a fairly nice D/S last night from a regular old bag of wheat cents. A reasonable die marker is the die scratch beside the T in LIBERTY but in general if there is a die crack to the east of VDB then it is stage B and if also a die crack to the west of VDB then stage C. More or less, making this a stage C coin. Chucked in a poorly photoshopped S on the mintmark as well to show where the secondary mint mark is.

Nice catch! That can be a tough critter to spot on circulated coins. You have a good eye for these.

Nice find and congratulations.

BTW - it may sound very off the wall, but the tip of a porcupine needle can be used to clear the gunk out from the center of the MM on your coin. Most quills are much smaller than a toothpick and are soft enough they do not scratch coins.

Where do you get porcupine needles if you don't have one of the critters as your pet (and no local road kill?)... ebay (of course). Last time I looked they were 4.00 for a sandwich bag full.

The only time I have seen a scratch from using a quill has been the very rare occasion when the gunk has a small grain of something in it that's hard enough to scratch the coin's surface. When I put the quill into the gunk to lift it out, the grain gets pushed against the surface while being moved. After hundreds of coins this has only happened a very few times.
