I have seen similar several times before, some of them even on something which seems to be a coin, but not sure what is purpose of that "frame"? All is in one piece.

Is that some kind of rough replica? Or maybe matrix for the medal?

Any idea what particularly this piece can be?

Thank you!

Many larger medals are struck without a collar and with oversized blanks as it requires less pressure than striking with a collar. They are then punched or lathe turned to size. Yours looks like it hasn't gone through the final trimming. I have several of these from private mints. If yours is a genuine mint product from the centennial, it may have additional value wit the right collector.

The design is the same as the Bronze Award Medal http://www.expomedals.com/1876.html

This is not an area I collect and do not know who the "experts" are that would know more about this piece.
