1981 D Quarter That Has Extra Metal?

Wooden1165 Valued Member United States 54 Posts	Posted 07/11/2018 12:44 pm This quarter looks and feels like it has extra metal!I know that doesn't sound right,but it does. I think... My husband was looking at it under the microscope and it looked like it has circles all around some wore out lettering on the back. I picked it up and found out that those s places were raised even and kinda sharp. What do yall make of it? Report this Post to the Staff

JimmyD Bedrock of the Community Canada 21647 Posts	Posted 07/11/2018 1:03 pm Not a stain but not extra metal either or it wouldn't be transparent. Possibly glue. Have you seen if it could be picked off? Sometimes acetone can be used to remove it. Report this Post to the Staff

You should be able to peel it off the surface with a sharp edge like a razor blade. Soaking in the right solvent for long enough would remove it also (acetone is a good start, but there are others). Regardless, this coin is a spender.
